Getting ready to take the AHIP Medicare training exam for the first time? Don’t worry—you’ve got this! Whether you’re a brand-new agent or a seasoned pro, we’ve compiled a helpful list of strategies to boost your chances of passing AHIP on your first attempt.
To be certified and ready to sell Medicare Advantage and Part D plans, agents must complete federally mandated training in Medicare basics and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (FWA). AHIP certification is one of the most widely accepted ways to meet this requirement.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through practical tips to prepare effectively, reduce test-day stress, and set yourself up for success. Even if you’ve taken AHIP before, you might discover a few new tricks to make this year’s exam easier.
Prepare the Right Way (Yes, That Means Studying!)
When it comes to passing the AHIP final exam, nothing beats the official training modules and practice quizzes. They’re the most reliable tools to help you succeed.
Think back to your school days—what was the real key to acing a test? (Spoiler: It probably wasn’t sliding your textbook under your pillow and hoping to absorb the info overnight!) Success came from actually reviewing and understanding the material.
The same principle applies here: study smart, and you’ll be ready to pass with confidence.
Take Time to Review the Training Modules
Be sure to go through the AHIP training modules at least once—and if you’re new to the material, consider reviewing them a second or even third time. Don’t rush through the content. Take your time and absorb the information on each slide, especially if this is your first time taking the exam.
If you’re recertifying, you might only be required to complete modules four and five. However, we strongly recommend reviewing all sections to refresh your knowledge and prepare for the wide range of questions you may face on the final exam.
Keep in mind: in past years, some questions from the AHIP practice quizzes have shown up on the final test—so being comfortable with both the quiz questions and their variations can make a big difference.
Make the Most of the AHIP Practice Quizzes
Throughout the training modules, you’ll find practice quizzes designed to reinforce what you’ve learned. Take full advantage of them—complete each one, and don’t hesitate to retake them as often as needed.
Many agents have reported seeing similar or identical questions from these quizzes on the actual AHIP final exam. That’s why it’s so important to be confident in your answers and recognize how questions might be reworded.
If you miss a question, take the time to review the related content in the module and figure out the correct answer. Then, jot it down—either in a notebook or in a Word doc on the same device you’ll be using for the exam. Having your personalized notes handy can be a great resource come test day.
Which leads us to the next tip…
Take Notes—And Use Them Wisely
As you move through the AHIP training modules and practice quizzes, don’t hesitate to take notes—especially on concepts or details that are hard to remember. Make note of key points and where to find them in the modules. These notes will become a valuable resource when it’s time to take the exam.
Here’s the good news: the AHIP exam is open-book. That means you can refer to both the training modules and your personal notes during the test. You can even download and save the modules to your computer if you want the exact wording at your fingertips.
Pro Tip: Use a Microsoft Word document to organize your notes. This makes it easy to search for keywords or topics during the exam.
While taking the test, jot down any questions or topics that trip you up. If you don’t pass on your first attempt (it happens!), revisit those specific questions and think critically about what went wrong. Then, go back to the relevant slides in the modules, study them closely, and add more detailed notes to guide you on your next try—even something as simple as “Check Slide 12 in Module 3 for this answer” can be a huge help.
Remember:
AHIP may be open-book, but it’s still timed. Being prepared and knowing where to quickly find information can make all the difference.
Studying Is Still Essential—Even for an Open-Book Test
Before starting the AHIP exam, be sure to download the slide decks and either save them to your computer or print them out for easy access. And don’t forget—“Put in the Preparation” is one of our key tips for a reason.
While the AHIP exam is open book, that doesn’t mean you can skip studying. In fact, relying too heavily on the materials during the test can slow you down and hurt your score. The more familiar you are with the content ahead of time, the more confident and efficient you’ll be when answering questions.
The goal isn’t to memorize everything—it’s to understand the material well enough that you only need to search for the occasional tough question, not every answer.
And if simply reviewing your notes isn’t helping the information stick, don’t worry. Everyone learns differently. Try using a few of the following study techniques tailored to various learning styles:
Study Strategies for Different Learning Styles
Everyone learns differently—so why not tailor your prep in a way that works best for you? Here are some effective tips based on your preferred learning style:
Visual Learners
- Use visual aids: Sketch diagrams, charts, or mind maps in your notes or directly on your printed modules.
- Color-code for clarity: Highlight key topics using different colors or use sticky notes to organize concepts visually.

Auditory Learners
-
Speak it out: Read your notes aloud to help reinforce the material through sound.
-
Study with others: Join a study group or talk through concepts with a friend or colleague.

Kinesthetic Learners
-
Get moving: Walk around or pace as you review your notes aloud—it helps link movement with memory.
-
Take active breaks: Step away to stretch or move regularly; physical activity can boost focus and retention.

Reading/Writing Learners
-
Simplify and condense: Take the key notes you’re struggling with and condense them onto a single, typed page.
-
Write it out: Handwrite your most important bullet points to help reinforce the content.
Keep an Eye on the Clock
The AHIP exam includes 50 questions with a two-hour time limit, which means you’ll have roughly 2 to 2.5 minutes per question. It may seem manageable, but time can slip away quickly—especially if you plan to review your answers or revisit any tougher questions at the end.
To manage your time effectively:
-
Start with the easy wins: Go through the exam once and answer all the questions you’re confident about.
-
Flag the tricky ones: Make note of any uncertain questions as you go.
-
Use your second pass wisely: After completing the first round, circle back to the questions you marked and use your notes or modules to guide you.
Also, keep in mind: if you need to retake the test, the question set may be different, as they’re randomly selected each time.
Important Tip: An attempt is only recorded if you click “Submit” or the test timer runs out. Screen refreshes or accidental exits no longer count as official attempts, so you don’t need to worry about losing a try by mistake.
Didn’t Pass on the First Try? Don’t Worry—You’ve Got Options
If you don’t pass the AHIP exam on your first attempt, don’t stress—it happens, and it’s not the end of the road. You’re allowed up to three attempts per enrollment. If you don’t pass after those three tries, you can re-enroll and purchase a new set of three attempts.
Important note: Many Medicare carriers will not contract with agents who fail the AHIP exam three times in a single year, so it’s best to aim for success within your first three attempts. That said, we’re confident you’ll pass on the first try with the right preparation!
There’s no required wait time between attempts, so if you narrowly missed passing, you can jump back in immediately. However, we recommend reviewing your notes, studying the sections you struggled with, and taking time to reinforce the material before trying again.
Keep This in Mind:
Many returning agents find AHIP much easier after their first year. It just takes some familiarity with the content and a little patience. If you get more questions wrong than expected or don’t pass the first time, don’t be discouraged. Revisit the areas you found challenging, brush up on your notes, and go into your next attempt better prepared.
You’ve got three opportunities to pass—and with the right effort and strategy, you might not need all of them!
