To sell Medicare Advantage plans and Part D products, agents must complete government-required Medicare and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training. AHIP (America’s Health Insurance Plans) certification is a common way to fulfill this requirement. Here’s how to best prepare for the exam and set yourself up for success.
Review the Training Modules
Go through the AHIP training modules thoroughly, at least once, and review them a second or third time if needed. Take your time and let the details sink in, especially if it’s your first time taking the exam. Even if you’re recertifying, reviewing all parts can refresh your memory and prepare you for the variety of questions on the final test.
Complete the AHIP Practice Quizzes
The practice quizzes within the training modules are crucial. Many of the questions from these quizzes have appeared on the final exam. Retake these quizzes until you’re comfortable with all potential variations.
Take Notes
As you review the modules and practice quizzes, take notes on anything you find challenging. These notes can be invaluable during the test since AHIP is an open-book exam. Consider printing the modules or saving them to your computer for quick reference.

You have 50 questions to answer in two hours, giving you about two to two and a half minutes per question. First, answer all the questions you know, then return to the more challenging ones.

Taking the test in Google Chrome can reduce errors. Utilize the split-screen feature to have the test and modules side by side. If you have a second monitor, use it to keep the modules open on one screen and the test on the other.

Find a quiet, comfortable place with a stable internet connection. Minimize distractions by silencing your phone and notifications.
Set the Mood
Create a relaxing environment. Wear comfortable clothes, light a candle, and have your favorite snacks and drinks nearby. Staying hydrated and having brain-fueling snacks can help maintain focus.

Approach the test with a positive mindset. Optimism can help manage stress and improve your overall performance.
If You Don’t Succeed, Try Again!
If you fail the AHIP test, don’t worry. You can retake it up to three more times. Many carriers, however, may not accept more than three failures in a year. Aim to pass within three attempts. If you need to retake the test, review the material and your notes thoroughly before trying again.
