Understanding AHIP

What Is AHIP Certification and How Do I Get It?

As an independent Medicare agent, you might think you’re ready to sell with your leads in hand and contracts signed. But wait—have you completed your AHIP certification yet? This crucial step ensures you comply with government rules for selling Medicare Advantage plans. Here’s what you need to know about AHIP certification and how to get it.

What Is AHIP?

AHIP stands for America’s Health Insurance Plans. It is a national trade organization that represents health insurance providers. Formed in 2013 from the merger of the Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA) and the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP), AHIP now represents over 127 organizations covering more than 200 million Americans and over 90,000 healthcare professionals. AHIP advocates for affordable, equitable, and sustainable healthcare through lobbying, research, and policy development. They are also known for their Medicare and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (FWA) training for insurance agents.

Why Get AHIP Certified?

To sell Medicare Advantage plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), you must complete annual Medicare and FWA training compliant with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Being AHIP certified means you have completed this training and understand the latest CMS guidelines and regulations, qualifying you to sell Medicare Advantage and Part D plans for the current or upcoming plan year.

  4. Exam: After completing the courses, you must pass a timed, 50-question test with a score of 90% or higher to become AHIP certified. This certification of completion can be transmitted to all of your carrier active appointments directly after completing the course. Refer back to our YouTube channel for details.
